Making an Instagram Story from a product

Making an Instagram Story from a product

You have a product, a phone, and no design tools. The Story Creator takes the product you already put in your shop and gives you back a finished Story sized image with your shop name, the product, the price and your shop address already on it.

Where it is

Open Marketing, then Story Creator. Four steps along the top: Story type, Content, Style, Customize.

Step one, and what is actually available

Five story types are listed and one works today. Product Showcase, which highlights a product with its image, name and price, is the live one. Sale / Discount, New Arrival, Customer Review and Store Announcement are all shown with a Soon label and cannot be selected yet.

So this is a one path tool for now, and the path is a good one. The rest of this is about using it well.

Content and style

Content is where you pick the product. It pulls the product's own image, name and price, so a product with a bad photo makes a bad Story. If the image is weak, fix the product photo first and come back: everything downstream is built on it.

Style offers two, Dark and Light. Pick the one that matches what you normally post, not the one that looks best on this product in isolation. A feed where every Story is the same treatment reads as a shop. Alternating reads as somebody experimenting.

Customize, and the two buttons at the end

Customize is where you adjust the layout before exporting, with the canvas shown as you will get it.

Then Download Image. The canvas is 1080 by 1920, which is exactly Story size, so nothing gets cropped when you upload it.

Under it there is a second button, Copy product link, and it is the one people miss. It copies the direct link to that product, and the hint under it says to paste it in your Instagram bio or caption.

That matters more than the picture does. A Story with no way to buy is a Story that made somebody want something and then asked them to go and find it. Copy the link, put it in the Story as a link or in the caption, and the person who wants the thing can get it in one tap.

Getting value out of it

The image already carries your shop name and your shop address, so a Story that gets screenshotted and sent to a friend still says where it came from. That is the main reason to use this rather than a photo with text typed over it.

Two habits. Make one when you add a product, while you are already in the shop and the photo is fresh in your mind. And do not post the same product twice in a week with a different style, which is the obvious temptation when the tool makes it cheap.
