Changing your shop's web address, and the thirty day wait

Changing your shop's web address, and the thirty day wait

Your shop opens on an address at berkedai.com with your name in front of it. You can change that name, but only once in a thirty day window, and the second time you try the Save button will be greyed out with a line telling you how many days are left.

That makes this the one setting worth getting right slowly.

Where it is

Open Settings, then Store, and find the Shop Domains card, described as Manage your store's web address. Only the shop owner can reach it.

The first field is your platform address, labelled Platform subdomain (changeable once per month). Type a new one and a preview appears under it showing the full address you would end up with, so you can read it before you commit.

Once changed, the field locks and the card counts down the remaining days.

Why the thirty days exists, and why it should worry you

The lock is not the real cost of changing. The real cost is every place the old address is already written.

Before you change it, count them. Your bio on every account. The card in the parcels you posted last week. Your WhatsApp About. The group chats where you pasted it. Anything printed. A sticker on your packaging. Receipts already sent. None of those update themselves, and a buyer who types the old one gets nothing.

So do it in this order. Change the address, then fix every bio the same day, then use the new one on everything you print from now on. The thirty day lock is a reason to think first, not the thing that hurts.

If you are picking a first address, pick one you can say down a phone line and spell once. Short beats clever, and a name people can spell after hearing it beats both.

A domain of your own

The same card is where you point a domain you already own at your shop, with + Add a custom domain. Type it without the https, as yourbrand.com.

Two things gate this. Your storefront has to be verified first, and you will be told plainly if it is not. And the domain has to be one you own somewhere else, because this is pointing, not buying. There is nothing to buy from us for it.

The DNS part, which is the only fiddly bit

Once the domain is added, the card shows a table of records to add at whoever you bought the domain from, with a Type, a Name and a Value for each, and a Copy button on every value so you are not retyping them by hand. Copy rather than type: one wrong character and nothing resolves, and the error looks identical to having done nothing.

Then wait. DNS changes take their own time to spread, and the card checks the status rather than making you guess. If it has not come good after a few hours there is a Retry.

Your berkedai.com address keeps working after a custom domain goes live. It does not disappear, so nothing you shared before is broken by this.

Copy each value rather than typing it. One wrong character looks exactly like having done nothing.

Removing one

If you take a custom domain off, you will be asked to confirm, and the dialog offers Keep it as the way out. Your shop goes back to being reached on its berkedai.com address, which has been there all along.
